Tasks/Assignments for intern: Gatespring was originally founded as Gatespring Consulting, a consulting service to positively impact the field and its leaders while supporting and strengthening the future of the individuals we serve. As the need of the community has grown, so has Gatespring, which has established a learning platform and small private practice. Our work not only bridges the gap between committed service providers and recovering substance use individuals; it leverages experience, empathy and scientific evidence to end addiction and help communities thrive. Interns would primarily work with technical assistance requests from SAMHSA's Opioid Response Network. These requests range from physicians in rural areas attempting to provide addiction treatment to working with large healthcare organizations implementing systems-wide change to accommodate individuals suffering with substance use disorders. Interns will also be involved in projects like the anti-stigma campaign we are creating with an addiction treatment provider in Tennessee or a curriculum around opioid use disorders for First Responders throughout NC. Interns will research the latest evidence-based practices and protocols for prevention, treatment and recovery work. Assist with presentations on opioids and attend small client meetings (in-person and video-conference), large community outreach meetings/presentations, conferences on addiction prevention/treatment/recovery while keeping up-to-date on important policy issues around substance use disorders, mental health treatment and prevention/recovery. Students will be engaged in each stage of the process when working with technical assistance requests including planning phone calls with requestors, needs assessments for agencies/communities, creating/implementing action plans along with site visits and community presentations. There is also an opportunity for those with clinical interest to build a foundation of knowledge of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing, observe group therapy, and perform other relevant clinical tasks. Based on the appropriate match, there is a potential for a 2nd year clinical placement with our private practice, Gatespring Therapy.
Ideal student description: The ideal intern will have exceptional written and oral communication competence, strong project management skills, and the ability to present well. This internship requires skill in searching research databases for the best evidence-based practices and protocols around substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, and community engagement/empowerment efforts. Candidates will ideally be comfortable with technology, focused, and passionate about micro and macro level changes in our response to the addiction epidemic. A great placement for non-traditional students and highly motivated learners.
