Tasks/Assignments for intern: • Conducts psychosocial and needs assessments
• Develops and implements individualized plans to connect clients to community-based resources to meet identified social support needs and monitors progress.
• Provides short or long-term case management and service coordination
• Interviews clients and other collateral contacts to build social history and gather mitigating evidence.
• Digests and summarizes client’s records in an accessible format
• Conducts social science research on relevant mitigation themes
• Assists with compilation of persuasive, compelling, mitigation reports detailing client’s life story for the Court
• Provides supportive counseling to clients experiencing grief, trauma, and/or other adverse life experiences.
Ideal student description: • Demonstrates flexibility and reliability
• Mission-aligned experience (work or lived) advocating on behalf of people/communities directly impacted by the criminal/immigration/indigent civil legal systems;
• Familiarity with enmeshed penalties and collateral consequences triggered by criminal-legal system contact;
• Demonstrated knowledge of the best practices in socially and culturally competent representation of marginalized people;
• Skill in communicating effectively across lines of difference with others;
• Familiarity working with people who have a mental health, substance use, or behavioral health diagnosis;
• Ability to interview indigent clients and collateral contacts to assess client’s legal and social support needs, as well as gather often sensitive information for mitigation purposes;
• Ability to synthesize large quantities of information from records in a digestible format;
• Superior communication skills, both oral and written
• Ability to fluently speak and write in Spanish preferred
