Tasks/Assignments for intern: psychosocial assessments; documentation; emotional counseling and support, active listening, empathizing with feelings associated with having an illness, referrals to community resources, contacting state sickle cell educators regarding resources and education, coordination with DSS/CPS, communicating with school to advocate for patients, leading small sickle cell group of adolescents and teens (ages 13-18); small projects such as assisting with development of programming and coordinating care for lost to follow up patients.
Ideal student description: strong time management skills and ability to be flexible in fast paced environment; open-minded and ability to work with diverse and underserved populations; ability to work with chronic illnesses both inpatient and in the outpatient clinic setting; strong communication skills and ability to build rapport with patients and families; Strong team player skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, psychologists, child life specialists, etc. Willingness to learn!
