Tasks/Assignments for intern: Assisting with teaching an abuse prevention program in public schools. Currently teach all 4th graders, and plan to expand to K and PreK. In addition the student would be cross trained to help with advocacy and support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They will learn about the court system and helping survivors navigate it. They could have the opportunity to assist with support groups as well. The will learn about the Counties Multidisciplinary team the meets monthly to coordinate services to child victims of felony crime and their non-offending family members. This team includes all Chatham County Law enforcement entities and prosecutors and discusses the investigation of these crimes and prosecution of the offenders.
Ideal student description: A student who has a strong interest in child welfare and advocating for families would be a good fit. This position has a combination of predictable and planned activities, like attending MDT meetings and teaching the school program, as well as some crisis response work, so flexibility is important. I think any student who has an interest in the areas of practice, has a positive attitude and a good work ethic will do great here. We have a large and diverse Latinx community in Chatham County, and we offer our services in Spanish and English. We do not need an intern who is bilingual since all of us are, but have this to offer any students who want to serve the Latinx community or improve their Spanish speaking ability.
