Other Functions: Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. (LANC) serves a population of 3.6 million North Carolinians who are unable to afford and attorney to assert their legal rights. LANC represented over 25,000 people a year, provides some form of assistance to over 50,000 people a year. Many of our clients are unable to fully resolve their issues using the law alone. We would like to develop an ability to holistically serve our clients and the public at large by incorporating social work into our advocacy.
Tasks/Assignments for intern: Goals:
1. Determine how Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. (LANC) works and all of the connections we have to other organizations.
2. Identify ways that social work can be integrated into LANC's operations to have maximum impact on ameliorating the effects of poverty. This might include a statewide resources database, in-office volunteers or staff social workers, social workers embedded with our community partners, direct referrals to social worker volunteers or organizations, social worker volunteers or low bono professionals who consult on cases, a statewide internship program, etc. This is not a comprehensive list of ideas.
3. Identify and engage the key stakeholders for these ideas
4. Perform a feasibility study on the ideas generated
5. Design pilot projects for the most promising options
6. Look for grant opportunities for these pilot project ideas
