Tasks/Assignments for intern: The intern assignment will be a replication of what the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor does: completing a biopsychosocial assessment; completing screening for alcohol and drug dependence; educating the patient; family and staff re alcohol and substance abuse. Utilizing motivational interviewing and other social work theories and counseling tools to assist the patient. Completing documentation on patient; referring and planning discharge of patient. Working on excel sheet for reporting on how our work is making a difference in the community and the hospital in a positive manner.
Ideal student description: The ideal student for this placement would want to really learn. It would be a student that has an open mind and a sense of humor. The Emergency Room is fast paced and chaotic. The student would have to enjoy working in a place that has 15 things going on at once; be able to juggle more than 1 thing at a time and be okay if not everything is perfect. I love being a social worker. I bring that love with me everyday to work, after 20 years of being a social worker, I still find it challenging and rewarding.
