Tasks/Assignments for intern: Our organization works in four areas - education, advocacy, food systems, and farm services. There are opportunities for an intern to work to support our annual conferences and farm tours, but as a member of the Policy Team, an intern's primary responsibilities would involve supporting our grassroots advocacy efforts around state and federal level policy. This would include sending out action alerts, engaging individual CFSA members in grassroots advocacy efforts, providing educational opportunities to teach the community about certain agricultural and food policies, attending sessions and meetings at the NC General Assembly and generally supporting any CFSA policy campaign. Another big portion of the CFSA Policy Team's work involves the support for and development of food councils in collaboration with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems at NCSU. This work involves on the ground community organizing, meeting facilitation, public presentations, meeting with government and organizational representatives, and general support for communities working to develop a community food council. An intern would be involved in all aspects of this community organizing work.
Ideal student description: An ideal student for our agency would have a passion for agricultural and food policy, social justice, public health and community organizing. The ideal student would be self-motivated yet a good team member, be able to work in and navigate complex political systems, and be willing and able to do some travel (with the supervisor) to support our advocacy and community organizing activities across the Carolinas.
