Tasks/Assignments for intern: Interns will provide direct service (crisis intervention, medical case consultation/management, short-term counseling, and referral) to clients of the Veterinary Health Complex; additionally, interns will be involved in the development and management of a pet safe haven program (if funded) to address the link between family violence and animal abuse. Interns will have the opportunity to respond to requests for collegiate and community education and teaching.
Ideal student description: The ideal student for this placement is an emotionally mature, self-directed critical thinker with good verbal and written communication skills. The ideal student will come with foundational experience in individual and group counseling methods and a capacity to thoughtfully assess and support human-animal relationships. This is an emotionally-charged and busy field site, so interns are expected to triage cases and manage multiple (and sometimes conflicting) priorities, as well as work closely with an interdisciplinary team.
